Basic Tips for Preventing Tire Blowouts

Express Oil Change & Service Center • Dec 23, 2021

If you’re cruising down the highway and suddenly one of your tires blows out, it puts you in a frightening situation, potentially leading to a major accident. Fortunately, there are some basic precautions you can take to reduce your risk of a tire blowout. At Express Oil Change & Service Center, our local mechanics can conduct tire maintenance tasks that will help to prevent a blowout from occurring. And if you need new tires, we can set you up with the right set for your needs and budget.

Ways to Reduce Your Risk of a Tire Blowout

One way to avoid blowouts is to always drive with the proper tire pressure. You’ll want to check the exact pressure specification for your tires and inflate them as indicated. Also, if your TPMS light flashes on, then you should heed its warning. This is a sign that your tire pressure is not at a safe level.

Another way to reduce the risk of a blowout is to always stay up-to-date with tire rotation. Tires usually need to be rotated somewhere between 6,000 and 8,000 miles. When you don’t stay current with tire rotation, tread is liable to wear down unevenly, making a blowout more likely to occur.

Replacing old, worn-out tires can also decrease your chances of experiencing a blowout. Usually, all-season tires will remain safe for 50,000 miles or more. But as your tires start to reach higher mileage, you’ll want to keep a closer eye on their tread. If your tread shrinks to 4/32”, then you’ll want to start considering getting your next set of tires. And if your tread gets down to 2/32”, then you should get a new set as soon as possible. With low tire tread, tires are prone to heating up faster, making them more vulnerable to blowouts.
