6 Signs of Brake Trouble that You Shouldn’t Ignore

Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers • November 21, 2024

Brake trouble can start subtly but, if ignored, can lead to serious safety issues. Knowing the early signs of brake trouble can help you stay safe on the road and avoid more expensive repairs. At Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers, we provide expert brake repair in the greater Orlando area. Here are six common signs of a brake issue.

Squeaking or Squealing Sounds

One of the most common warning signs of brake trouble is a high-pitched squeaking or squealing noise when you apply the brakes. Brake pads have wear indicators that make noise when they’re getting thin, alerting you that it’s time to replace them. Ignoring this can lead to further wear and, eventually, metal-on-metal grinding, which can damage your rotors.

Grinding Noise

A grinding noise is more severe than squealing and often indicates that your brake pads have worn down completely, causing harsh metal-on-metal contact. This can damage the rotor, resulting in costly repairs. If you hear grinding when braking, get your brakes inspected immediately to prevent further damage and ensure your safety.

Vibrating

If you feel a vibration or pulsation when braking, it could be a sign of warped rotors. Warping can occur due to overheating. When rotors are warped, the brake pads don’t make consistent contact, reducing braking effectiveness.

Brake Pedal Feels Soft or Spongy

A soft or spongy brake pedal often indicates air in the brake lines or a brake fluid issue. If your car is leaking brake fluid, you’ve got a major safety hazard, and should get towed to the shop instead of driving to it.

Car Pulling to One Side When Braking

If your vehicle pulls to one side when braking, it could mean that one of the brake calipers is stuck, perhaps because of corrosion. This poses a major safety risk and needs to be addressed ASAP.

Dashboard Warning Light

An illuminated brake warning light means you should visit the shop for diagnostics. This light may illuminate due to issues such as low brake fluid or faulty wheel speed sensors.
